Fundación Saimiri is a non-profit organization founded in 2010, dedicated to conservation, community engagement, and sustainable development. One of our core strategic pillars is educational tourism in Costa Rica, through which we design immersive learning experiences that create meaningful impact for both students and local communities.
A Service Learning Experience in Costa Rica
As part of our Service Learning in Costa Rica program, in March 2026 we welcomed a group of 11 students from the English Department at Columbus State University, accompanied by a faculty member. These programs are implemented by Fundación Saimiri in partnership with CEPA Study Travel, combining academic learning with hands-on community engagement.
Working Alongside Local Communities in the Osa Peninsula
Over the course of eight days, students lived and worked in the community of Rancho Quemado, located in the biodiverse Osa Peninsula—one of the most important regions for conservation in the country.
During their stay, students collaborated closely with the local Development Association and the Biological Monitoring Group, participating in community-based conservation initiatives that strengthen local capacity and promote sustainable livelihoods.
Supporting Food Security Through Sustainable Projects
As part of the program, two mobile chicken coops were built to support local families. This initiative helps improve food security in rural Costa Rica by increasing access to egg production for both household consumption and potential income generation.
A particularly meaningful aspect of this project was the collaborative process: over two days, students and community members worked side by side to design and construct the coops, fostering knowledge exchange, cultural connection, and experiential learning.
Educational Tourism that Creates Lasting Impact
This experience reflects the essence of sustainable travel in Costa Rica—where education, service, and conservation come together to create lasting benefits. Students gain real-world insight into conservation and community development, while local families receive tangible support that strengthens resilience and opportunity.
At Fundación Saimiri, we believe that service learning programs in Costa Rica can be powerful tools for change—connecting people, protecting biodiversity, and supporting communities in meaningful, long-term ways.
